Cat’s Claw Extract Supplement: Relief That Works.

February 26th, 2010 Tyjuan Giordano No comments

Because there are so many kinds of cat’s claw supplements, such as: cat’s claw leaves, cat’s claw bark, and cat’s claw twigs, cat’s claw is one of the most confusing nutritional supplements currently available in health food stores. Although all cat’s claw supplements claim to help the immune system, only the root of Uncaria tomentosa gives the true health benefits by possessing the healing power to treat and prevent diseases such as cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcers, degenerative diseases, and also providing anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and anti-microbial benefits.

Rendered into liquid form, however, extracts of cat’s claw have been found to have potent adaptogenic, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, and these are therefore used by herbal therapists to tackle a wide variety of common ailments. The anti-inflammatory qualities of the herb indicate potential benefits in the treatment of arthritis, rheumatism and bursitis; as well as digestive problems and ulcers, whilst as an adaptogen and anti-oxidant cat’s claw is believed to boost the immune system, lower blood pressure and cholesterol and even help in the fight against cancer.

Serious research into the benefits of cat’s claw has been underway in Europe since the 1970s, and although, as noted above, conventional medicine remains reluctant to confirm the herb’s therapeutic value, the fact that cat’s claw is only available on prescription in certain countries is a clear indication of its biochemical potency. Cat’s claw’s power as an immune system booster appears to be related to unique properties in the alkaloids derived from it, certain of which appear directly to enhance the ability of the body’s white blood cells to destroy potentially harmful foreign matter. These alkaloids also seem to stimulate the production of the vital T4 lymphocyte and leucocyte immune system cells which are crucial in fighting viral infections.

Why they started to move that fast? Because the recent studies about this herb extract shows that its effects are huge. The change of a patient who is taking cat’s claw could be notorious.

The active substances in Cat’s Claw are alkaloids, tannins and several other phytochemicals. Some of the alkaloids have been proven to boost the immune system. The major alkaloid rhynchophylline has anti-hypertensive effects and may reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack by lowering blood pressure, increasing circulation, reducing heart rate and controlling cholesterol.

Other constituents contribute anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anticancer properties. Many treatments combine the herb with different plants and natural products to increase the absorption and bioavailability.

But in the case of cat’s claw the only contraindications for its use appear to for pregnant women and those suffering from disorders of the immune system. For all others, the herb appears to be completely safe, although very rare cases of minor gastric upsets and headaches have been reported.

European clinical studies have used the extract from the bark in combination with AZT in the treatment of AIDS. It is also used in the treatment and prevention of arthritis and rheumatism, as well as diabetes, PMS, chronic fatigue syndrome, lupus, and prostrate conditions.

Although clinical studies and research are sparse, muira puama is still promoted today as a treatment for erectile dysfunction and as a male aphrodisiac. It has also been used for gastrointestinal disorders and as a treatment for indigestion.

Muira puama appears to be relatively safe at the dosages expressed above. Insomnia and restlessness have been noted with high doses. Due to lack of research with human subjects, women who are pregnant or lactating should avoid taking this supplement. Safety in children has also not been determined. There has not been any toxicity noted with long term use on muira puama. There do not appear to be any drug interactions with this supplement, although it may increase the effect of erectile dysfunction drugs and supplements.

Taking a look at the natural health movement.

February 14th, 2010 Brendan Carpenter No comments

Most people want holistic health. Being ill just wastes time and resources, and is a huge inconvenience for all involved. The common headache, little stomach cramps, these all waste a huge amount of time. Its no wonder we’re all looking for the “perfect health” product. With a holistic health approach, we strive for a balanced body, with less of the common problems that hold us back from an efficient lifestyle.

In this quest, people look to maintain the overall well being in every way. However, in times of sickness or illnesses, there are a number of medical options these days. Apart from the usual conventional medication, people have started exploring other options such as acupuncture, herbal remedies, massage and other forms of alternative medicines.

Alternative by definition means having options, therefore alternative medicine means you have the option to use different, possibly unconventional treatments to cure your ailments. These approaches could include so many things, from traditional chinese medicine which primarily consists of eating plants, herbs and barks, to yoga, an ancient Indian technique, to meditation, to massage, whether Thai, shiatsu, Swedish or others. Aromatherapy is a possibility, and acupuncture is proven to work on many ailments.

Due to the negative feelings many people have towards modern medicine, its monopoly on the health market is dwindling. One thing often heard is that there is no harmony in the medicine, meaning it will fix one ailment but damage your body in a different way.

Most of the time in the west, the doctor will try to fix the problem, with no regard to future health concerns. How many commercials have you seen where the side effects are worse than the problem it fixes? Alternative medicine is very different than this. they try to treat the body as a whole, not just one part at the cost of another. The reasoning behind this is that by keeping the patients well being first and foremost, when one part of the body needs to be healed, a healthy mind and spirit allows everything to heal better individually.

Due to this ancient yet novel concept of treating the body as a whole, alternative medicine is growing by leaps and bounds. By moving in on the void created by the doubts people have about conventional medicine, the herbal medicine market has grown 100% in the last two years. However, be careful about completely turning your back on what you grew up with. With so many people raving about alternative medicine, and relatively relaxed government regulations, you should still proceed with a little bit of caution.

Even if alternative medicine is naturally occurring, it can be dangerous if misused or abused in certain ways. Despite a lack of FDA labeling and dosage restrictions, they shouldn’t be taken in excess nor with other prescription drugs unless approved by your doctor. Combining it with alcohol is also to be avoided.

Acupuncture is also being taken up by many people in the west these days. This form of traditional chinese medicine uses needles to cure or prevent a variety of ailments. The tiny needles are placed in the skin at very specific points in the body, stimulating certain nerves and energy points. This plays a role in the treatment process.

After learning about all these new medicines, alternative medications and natural holistic healing methods, you may be tempted to just jump right in. Like everything else in life, though, always make sure that you carefully do your research. Learn as much as you can, though, and you should be just fine.

The Essential Tools of Chakra Balancing Therapy

December 11th, 2009 Anne-Marie Laureaut No comments

Hindu teachings tell us that the chakras are the important energy centers which are present in every human being. Our chakras are the places at which energy flows through our body. The proper flow of this energy is vital to maintaining our physical, mental and emotional health. You can’t actually see your chakras, but you can see their physical manifestation; major components of our endocrine systems.

Chakras control the flow of energy into and out of our bodies. This continuous flow of energy within us and between us and our environment is dependent on your chakras staying in a harmonious balance with each other for proper mental and physical health to exist.

The seven major chakras are ties to the function of a particular gland in our endocrine system. Our chakras are tied to everything we go through; each feeling, sensation and experience we have are related to our chakras.

Any kind of stress, whether mental, physical or emotional can negatively affect the balance of our chakras. We can have a loss of energy, even illness as a result of this imbalance. This is a clear sign if there ever was one that our chakras are out of balance.

For our body to reap the benefits of a well-tuned chakric system, they need to be functioning in harmony with one another. Chakra balance is essential to maintain its beneficial function to the human body and to achieve this, regular chakra balancing is necessary much like a car’s preventive maintenance procedures.

Importance of Chakra Balancing There are many different ways to balance your chakras; others are always being developed to help people reach a state of perfect balance in their chakras. This is the goal of those who want to have a more healthy, happy and productive life.

For starters, you have to understand that each individual chakra has its own frequency vibration that corresponds to naturally-occurring frequencies that are present in the environment. It is through these unique frequencies that each individual chakra receives and/or transmits energy referred to as chi, qi, or prana.

During periods of illnesses, our chakras are still functioning but may be out of synch which can hamper the free flow of energy to further aggravate our physical and/or mental and emotional illness. Other contributory factors to the malfunction of our chakra system are undue stress or the inability to cope, suppressed emotions, unhealthy food intake, and lack of exercise.

The balance of your chakras can, happily, be restored; although they will get out of balance from time to time, but this can be corrected.

Tools of Chakra Balancing: The most commonly used ways of restoring chakra balance are light, sound, crystals and gems, aromatherapy and color.

Colors: Commonly used colors and their corresponding chakras are red (root chakra), orange (sacral chakra), yellow (solar plexus chakra), green and turquoise (heart chakra), blue (throat chakra), violet (crown chakra) and white for all chakras.

Crystals and Gems: Gems, crystals and stones have been used in chakra balancing for thousands of years. Each chakra corresponds to a different color, as we now know; so the laying of gems or crystals of the appropriate color on the location of a chakra can help to restore balance. This can help the body properly heal.

Gems and crystals reflect light in their colors; the play of light through these gems can restore balance to the chakras by putting this light into the body at the appropriate points.

Light: Light therapy employs light not only on the eyes, but also on the reflex points and the meridian points of acupuncture to restore chakra balance. The broad spectrum of light is very beneficial here, including both visible and invisible frequencies, including those corresponding to the chakras.

Aromatherapy: Aromatherapy uses essential oils, massage oils which are scented as well as scented bath soaps to help the body heal and to restore proper chakra balance. Essential oils can return mental and emotional stability to a person who is out of balance. Aromatherapy is also effective in relieving stress, promoting relaxation and can also assist in alleviating depression and helping one to reach a meditative state.

Sound: Sound therapy creates chakra-resonant frequencies and produces a sensation of well being using tuning forks, soft music, Tibetan singing bowls and other means. Sound has natural soothing and chakra balancing properties and appeals to emotional response as well. A soothing, beautiful sound fosters relaxation and balance while a harsh one causes an anxious state. Sound can speed up healing and promote a higher state of consciousness.

It once was that chakra balancing was a lengthy and difficult process. Now, thanks to innovations in audio technology such as subliminal sound, binaural frequencies and self-hypnosis recordings, chakra balancing is a much simpler thing than it was even a few decades ago.

Anne-Marie Laureaut writes for the popular chakra-balance.com site. For more information on how chakra balancing can transform your whole life and how you can get free chakra balancing binaural sound frequencies recordings.

Calcific Tendinitis: What Is It Caused By and When Is It Cared For?

December 8th, 2009 Tom Nicholson No comments

Calcific tendinitis is a condition that causes sharp pain a joint, when calcium deposits form around the tendons and then break free, triggering inflammation. It usually hits the rotator cuff and can affect either or both shoulders.

No one really knows what causes calcific tendinitis, but there are some pretty clear indicators as to what does NOT cause it. Having too much calcium in the diet does not cause it, because those who are diagnosed with calcific tendinitis usually have normal calcium levels in their blood. Therefore, it is NOT advised that you limit calcium in your diet if you are diagnosed with this condition, because you could put yourself at risk for osteoporosis; if you get too little calcium in your diet, your body will simply take it from your bones.

In some cases, it may be that a metabolic condition may cause calcific tendinitis, or that kidney problems can cause these calcium deposits; however, this is only a guess and is not a definite and diagnosed cause. In addition, dramatic injury or overuse of the rotator cuff probably does not cause calcific tendinitis come either. Overuse CAN cause rotator cuff tendinitis, which occurs without excess calcium deposits being present.

May be related to age

Some speculate that age, and the gradual ramping down of human growth hormone in the late 20s are one trigger for calcific Tendinitis, as it doesn’t happen to people under the age of 30, there may be Tendinitis from overuse injuries, but they usually don’t have calcium deposits.

Symptoms

Most cases of calcific tendinitis are asymptomatic, until the calcium deposits break up and cause inflammation. The most common symptom (before inflammation) is when you have difficulty raising your arm above your shoulder level, triggered by the calcium deposit rubbing inside the rotator cuff. This is sometimes called “shoulder impingement syndrome”.

One hazard of calcific Tendinitis is calcium crystals shedding off the deposit and cause inflammation elsewhere. This may be the first indication that a problem exists as those crystals migrate and cause pain elsewhere. These calcium deposits may be re-absorbed by the body at this time.

Sudden onset

The usual time frame for onset is sudden; you move your shoulder and it hurts as if small bits of broken glass are nestled under your shoulderblade. Most times, the pain subsides after a week as the calcium gets reabsorbed.

If you see your doctor during an attack of acute calcific tendinitis, it can be seen on an x-ray, via the deposits that exist in your shoulder rotator cuff. Usually, calcific tendinitis treatment simply consists of taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatory pain relievers and applying ice. Doing range of motion exercises during this time can also prevent experiencing “frozen shoulder” symptoms.

For particularly severe pain, your doctor can give you a steroid or cortisone injection; in extreme cases, arthroscopic surgery can be recommended to break up the calcium nodule and extract it with a syringe.

Discover Different Types of Tendonitis Exercises

December 5th, 2009 Tom Nicholson No comments

It is a good idea to do Tendinitis Exercises before you do any sort of activity that will affect your tendons, especially in hamstrings and the Achilles areas. Tendinitis Exercises should not last over a few minutes at a time, however, they should be done daily. Stretching exercises helps promote a faster recovery, and will increase muscle tension and flexibility. Everyone should practice stretching, strengthening, and cardiovascular exercises on a daily basis. However be very careful not to over do the tendons.

Many ball players add a significant amount of pressure on their hamstrings. The hamstring tendons run along the back of the leg to the knee joint. Although tendons are strong and flexible, when they are stressed because of a lot of use, tiny tears will form which can cause inflammation. The older an individual is the more brittle their tendons get and are more prone to getting tendonitis.

Even if a person does preventative tendonitis exercises, there is still a possibility that they can injure one or more of their tendons. If you experience a warm or hot feeling, redness, and swelling in the general area of a hamstring or any of the areas around the tendons. You may then have tendonitis. Even some hamstring tendonitis is often mistaken for a grave knee injury. Rest is the best cure for this problem. It will take you nearly four to five weeks of no physical activities to recover. Applying ice to the affected area for about twenty minutes three to four times a day will aid in the healing process. Your doctor may also prescribe you some anti-inflammatory medicine. If you still feel a lot of pain, have your doctor examine you. It is a good idea to always warm up before doing strenuous physical activity, and in same cases, it may be a good idea to wear knee braces.

Some other well-known areas that can get tendonitis are the Achilles or Achilles Heel, which is called the heel cord. The heel cord is the largest and strongest tendon in the entire body. Athletes that play sports that require them to start or stop often and fast often suffer from Achilles tendonitis, such as basketball, baseball, and other games that involve such movements. One must warm up with tendonitis exercises to stop Achilles tendonitis from occurring. This type of tendonitis is not only limited to athletes. People that do not wear the proper footwear can also develop this condition. For example if a woman that wears high heels her Achilles heel cord will become shorter, and when the woman puts on flat footwear, the heel cord must stretch again. A similar comparison can be made with a man changing from his work boots into tennis shoes.

In addition, there are people that are just born with a heel cord that is too short, this can be helped by seeing a doctor. Stiffness, redness, and swelling are tell tale signs or tendonitis and can lead to more harm if they are not dealt with. Rest is a key factor to helping an injured heel cord. You should also be elevating your leg and taking any anti-inflammatory medication that your doctor has prescribed.
